This is a great article on a DC area sports legend. I did not know the depth of Mr. Bell’s contribution to this city and the sportsworld. Thank you David Aldridge for a great sneak peak at Harold Bell. I asked my Uncle if he ever heard of Harold Bell and he had stories of listening to Harold on the radio and watching him on TV with Petey Greene. Thanks again for a great article.

What a very thought provoking take on black erotica. I can not say how many times i have seen row after row of black erotica books on the shelves in my local library. They all have pictures of gorgeous sistas on the cover but the stories themselves continue to be the same. Thugs,drug dealers,rappers,ex cons etc etc as the love interest of these beautiful sistas. And to make matters worse the black women in these stories are portrayed as hoodrat,ghetto gangbangers. I am in the process of writing my first black erotica short story. The star of my story is definately none of that. I thank you for writing such a great essay. Peace.

I have known Mr. Harold Bell for many years. Harold has always reached out to help anyone and never asked for anything in return. He’s also passionate about his communities in saving lives of young people, jobs, education and training and keeping men and women out of the broken prison system. I have the utmost respect for Mr. Bell, when many shy away from a hate-crime situation that happened to me, while serving my country in the US Navy. Mr. Bell stepped up to the plate and did a story about the horrific situation, what guts! Today, as a result of his couragous pen to paper act, they, the VA are diligently working to fully compensate me for that heinous and vicious attempted murder on my life, from a card carrying Klansman serving in the United States Navy. I salute and commend Mr. Bell for all his supreme audacity, dedication, compassion for his communities, devotion and standing on the firing line for many years, regarding the voiceless, downtrodden, those caught in profound penury and the many others he helped to find there way in life. If we had many more Mr. Bells, our communities would be vibrant, more alive and we would never have to depend on anyone!

Sir, this is an outstanding commentary and I fully agreed with it. We are not beasts in the field and every time that N- word is used the profound shackles of slavery indignations, self-hatred is reinforced and mentally those individuals are lost in a storm, which is why we don’t buy from each other, or only wants to be treated by white physicians because we as a people can’t break those chains of slavery, we kill each other because of our enslaved minds and self-hatred. I would ask every African-American, MAN or WOMAN, honestly, to look in the mirror and asked yourself do I wear the shackles of slave mentality. If so, please get help! The use of the N-word for those that use it is Created by their own ignorance, ignoring the atrocities and pains of the African-American Holocaust. We must never forget the deeply-rooted suffering, murdering of the millions of African-Americans that lost their lives in the African-American Holocaust, only hearing the N- word as their final resting place. Today, we no longer wear the heavy shackles and chain of chattel slavery around our necks, waists, wrists or legs, our minds continue to enforced and reinforced the traces and patterns of profound behavior previously and horribly imposed upon our enslaved ancestors. Unfortunately, many are wearing those chains, unaware! It’s time to remove those invisible-chains of those who are blind, stop making excuses for the use of the N-word and understand what you are as African-Americans in this society! Break those CHAINS!
