Obama Victory Means We’re All Americans

Roughly around the time of my conception Reagan was sworn in as president of the United States. The great de-regulator destroyed many of the institutions that made our nation great. He was followed by Bush who continued his work. President Elect Obama represents a return to the use of government for the greater good of all people.

As an African American I am of course happy at the fact that someone of my background is finally in the most powerful position in our nation. But more importantly as an American I am proud to see my nation take a step toward becoming what it aspires to be. For the first time in my life, I feel that the word American describes me, and people like me, without qualification.

I am the grandchild of a sharecropper turned teacher, the descendant of Louisianan Creole slaves, and I am as American as anyone else. The great dream of America, that hard work can get you where you want to go, is a true one. Barack Obama will be a great president with sound and intelligent policies, and this is the most important thing of all. But more than that, Obama is a great symbolic victory for all Americans. Overcoming the racism of the past is not just an African American victory, it’s an American victory.

  1. Hello there!

I wrote a post about the Obama-ssiah dynamic that has emerged in the black community. It is DANGEROUS. It is DESTRUCTIVE.

One man does not define black people.
One man does not hold the destiny of black people in his hands.
One man is not the IDENTITY of the race.

We need to examine this slave mentality that was handed to our generation where it is acceptable to make “messiahs” out of people.

Black people put ALL of their hopes and ALL of their identity in Martin Luther King and fell apart when he was killed. He was ONE man….just a man.

Let us examine why we think so little of our race that we would even ENTERTAIN the fallacy that because one man was accepted by whites that it means that white people will now view all blacks differently.

Let us think more carefully about the mentality we cling to as we process this election and where our country is headed.

    Peace, blessings and DUNAMIS!
    Lisa

  2. I am a black, cherokee american woman whose father’s maternal family came from Mississippi and went down the “trail of tears” to Oklahoma. My grandmother received acres of land as a result of being on the Cherokee role. I would like to see the blacks who are direct decendents of Indian relatives get together regarding this issue of being ignored, also I’m a mother of a senseless murder victim in Los Angeles, a young man who was written up in the L..Times as having made 39 points in a high school game, who worked at Fed-ex at the time of his murder and was a 4.0 college student..murder in Inglewood remains unsolved..and when he needed medical help..instead of being taken to a hospitla less than 5 minutes away, he was taken in a bumpy ambulance miles away to9 arrive D.O.A. I’d like to have all shooting victims receive immediate help in my son’s honor and for the honor of hte many who have had the same experience..
