CONFUNKSHUN RETURNS WITH FIRST NEW STUDIO ALBUM IN MORE THAN TWO DECADES (EARLY 2015)

Posted in Black Interests, Black Men, Music, Music and Video Releases with tags , on October 14, 2014 by Gary Johnson

Con Funk Shun

Once upon a time there were many great self-contained R&B and funk groups, innovative, immensely popular artists such as Earth, Wind & Fire, War, The Meters, The Commodores, Kool & The Gang, Lakeside, Slave and many others who created a body of work in the 70’s and 80’s that still thrills audiences today. ConFunkShun was one of the successful bands in this wave, scoring 25 chart hits between 1976 and their break-up in 1987, including such smash hits as “Ffun,” “Chase Me,” “Electric Lady,” “Baby I’m Hooked” and others—many of which have been liberally sampled by the hip-hop generation. When the band re-united with lead vocalists/songwriters Michael Cooper and Felton Pilate, after more than two decades apart, they were welcomed back by their fans as they toured nationally to adoring crowds. Not content to ride on their past hits, they began writing and recording new material which they found got great response in concert. ConFunkShun’s brand new single “Your Night,” is currently making waves at radio. Their highly anticipated new CD and Shanachie debut MORE THAN LOVE (due out early 2015), is the band’s first new studio album in more than two decades. Their new music finds Con Funk Shun as irresistible as ever this time with an intoxicating blend of classic R&B and contemporary sonics.

“This album was clearly a must do for me,” Michael Cooper relates.” The main reason is simply because we can, we are able and we should. Too often people are falling much too early. We have been blessed to still be playing and loving the music, and to still have fans who are still buying and following our music. We simply had to do it.”

“We’re very excited to be bringing out new music from one of R&B’s greatest bands,” says Randall Grass, General Manager of Shanachie Entertainment. “They are equally strong on ballads and up-tempo material and their new music delivers the ConFunkShun sound but without sounding retro. A lot of people are going to be surprised.”

The challenge for any band with past success is to create new music that will please their already devoted fans but at the same time generate a fresh take on their music that connects with today’s contemporary audience.

In an effort to reach their goals, ConFunkShun has been collaborating with P Music Group Inc.’s Marlon McClain. P Music Group, Inc.’s founder, Michael Paran, has been the creative force behind the hit-making second career of R&B icon Charlie Wilson generating numerous accolades for Wilson including number one records and seven Grammy Award nominations.

“My job in the seventies and eighties was to write to get on the radio and to be competitive to work with what I had at the time,” confesses Cooper. “All the while telling a story as close to the truth as possible in the lyrics. Back in the late 70’s and 80’s Con Funk Shun used horns, synth keys, live players and big drums to make a point. Only today we have a marvelous tool call the Internet. Not only were we blessed to be in the studio together but we could email parts through cyberspace at 3am. Even have a song mixed by a person you’ve never met. A new and different kind of ‘Ffun’ Owww!”

In short, ConFunkShun is back in the game and playing for keeps!  Check out the new video to the new single “Your Night.”

Jody Watley Releases New Album: CD Sells Out In Less Than One Week

Posted in Black Interests, Music, Music and Video Releases, Women's Interests with tags , , , on July 28, 2014 by Gary Johnson

Jody Watley-Paradise

Los Angeles, CA – July 28, 2014: Established as one of the most prominent visionaries of her era, whose influence remains a key touchstone in contemporary pop music, Grammy Award winner, Jody Watley returns with her glamorous and funky new album, PARADISE. As executive producer at the helm of her own label, Avitone, Watley continues to convey her commitment as a savvy entrepreneur. Proving that quality rules over quantity, pre-orders for the 6 track album sold out in less than one week. PARDISE is available world-wide on iTunes, Amazon and other digital music outlets. A limited edition CD which was encouraged by her devoted fans, that includes the bonus track Everlasting, is available exclusively on Jody Watley’s online boutique (www.jodywatley.net).

The singer, songwriter, producer sighted the lack of attention spans in today’s society which prompted her to take a classic approach in recording PARADISE. She was reminded that many timeless albums were recorded in the 70’s and early 80’s that had as few as 7 songs on an album, and with Isaac Hayes’ ‘Hot Buttered Soul’ having only 4.

“It’s about quality, not quantity,” says Jody. “I think that albums with a lot of songs are out of touch with the times we live in and today’s record buyer – many artists and companies are holding on to outdated practices. Perhaps I’ll be the first to encourage other artists to make shorter albums, with better songs and a greater music impact.”

Inspired by her well documented roots in disco, soul, pop, dance and electronica music, Watley, who has mastered a career in keeping dance and R&B music relevant to today, continues her legacy on PARADISE. Jody continues to put genuine artistry and quality into everything she does, making each musical moment into a quality experience. The album incorporates live instruments meshed with the EDM direction she’s successfully delivered for more than a decade.

Former Prince NPG guitarist Levi Seacer plays on the thumper The Dawn, with live strings courtesy of the critically acclaimed Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and avant-garde dance jazz impresario, Mark DeClive-Lowe (The Dawn, Paradise, Tonight’s The Night). Other producers featured on PARADISE include Italy’s Luminodisco (Dancer), France’s Count de Money (Nightlife) and the U.K.’s hot producers, Soulpersona (Sanctuary).

Indie Insider: 10 Key Facts from Music Industry Insiders

TamikoHope4-1-201x300
By Tamiko Hope

Over the past 10 years I have seen, from the inside out, how the traditional music business model has shifted dramatically in a number of ways. Labels seldom invest in developing artists, the digital age has changed the way we consume music and social media has altered the way artists communicate and connect with their fan base. Because of my experience as an independent entertainment publicist and consultant, I have had the pleasure of witnessing indies accomplish great professional and financial success by controlling their creative property and having the perspective of where some see a ceiling, the indie doesn’t even know a ceiling exists. As Jay Z said on “F.U.T.W”, “We have yet to see a ceiling, we just top what we top.”

I wrote Indie Insider: 10 Key Facts from Music Industry Insiders to help people get the basic fundamental truths on taking control of their careers and not waiting on anyone to do for them what they can do for themselves. The premise of Indie Insider: 10 Key Facts from Music Industry Insiders is simple, straightforward and valuable advice from elusive insiders at entertainment outlets that include Allhiphop, REVOLT, XXL and BET. I also peppered each key fact with my own personal testimonies that co-sign the great “indie way.”

The indie way approach is all about creative professionals who aspire to build an authentic brand, craft their own way and profit from the fruits of their labor. Whether you choose to remain independent or eventually sign a major deal, the indie mindset knows its value and isn’t at the mercy of the conventional industry rules. If there is a job that needs to be done, it gets done. Period.

Indie Insider: 10 Key Facts from Music Industry Insiders is a concise reference guide of tactical, practical and applicable motivation. For those people who want to wait on opportunities to come to them, prefer to rush success without paying dues or want to be an overnight celebrity, keep searching for what you seek. However, if you want a transparent take on the music/entertainment industry from some of the game’s top insiders, then Indie Insider: 10 Key Facts from Music Industry Insiders is for you.

On the heels of her funky hit single, “Nightlife” becoming a Top 5 Urban and Top 10 Commercial Pop hit in the UK and Top 20 Hot Dance Club Play on Billboard gaining international success, dance music legend and Grammy-winning pop icon, Jody Watley continues to master her career. Jody’s individuality and style in Dance and R&B music is reflected in her newly released video to her classic dance soul anthem.  The “Queen of Cool” has, again, revived the good feel of the soul in dance music with the Dave Doyle video remix to “Nightlife” which paints a picture that evokes an uplifting emotion, with the spirit of the “nightlife” and glamour of people loving to dance, get glammed up, feel the groove, and simply have fun.

“Nightlife” was shot on location at the hottest night spot in the country, Giorgio’s (named in a recent article by The NY Times as “The City of Dancing Angels”) on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles.

Filmed by Steve Willis and edited by Ray Easmon of the UK, “Nightlife” features a cameo by Andy Warhol legend Joe Dallesandro, famed Giorgio’s club owner, Bryan Rabin, LA based dance crew “The Waackers” and mega choreographer Rosero McCoy (Britney Spears, Usher, America’s Best Dance Crew, Sing Off).

GRAMMY® Award Winning Pastor Charles Jenkins

Posted in Black America, Black Interests, Black Men, Music, Music and Video Releases with tags , , , on July 1, 2013 by Gary Johnson

Charles Jenkins

GRAMMY® Award Winning Songwriter and Five-time Stellar Award Winner, Pastor Charles Jenkins is our spotlight feature this month.  Jenkins is known for his smash hit, “Awesome”, a single that catapulted the Pastor and songwriter to the top of the Billboard charts.  Hot on the heels of the popular praise tune, Jenkins delivers a brand new song, “I Will Live”, from the latest CD, The Best Of Both Worlds.  Already exploding at radio and soaring up the BDS Charts, “I Will Live”, is an anthem of declaration.  The song was penned by Carlton Jenkins, brother of Pastor Charles Jenkins.  Pastor Jenkins wants the song to become an anthem for youth rebelling against senseless street violence.  He will also be touring to support the new record.

Pastor Charles Jenkins is a dynamic, inspirational and visionary religious and community leader who is greatly respected for his innovative and holistic approach to church growth, business development, neighborhood improvement, and large-scale community development and social change. He is widely known as the senior pastor of the legendary Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, Illinois, where, under his leadership, the membership has grown to 8,000 members. The author of the leadership book, Thriving In Change, he is also a sought-after adviser to governmental and political leaders, high-profile personalities, business groups, and advocacy organizations.

Jenkins’ new CD project with Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church—Pastor Charles Jenkins Presents Fellowship Chicago Live: The Best of Both Worlds – released online and in stores in June 2012.  With the production and release of The Best of Both Worlds, Jenkins continues a long musical tradition at Fellowship, which released 25 albums under the leadership of Jenkins’ predecessor, Reverend Clay Evans.

He attended Moody Bible Institute, in Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Christian Education. It was during that time that he became known to the leaders of the church he would eventually pastor. He later earned a Master of Arts in Religion from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Jenkins is married to Dr. Tara Rawls-Jenkins and has two daughters, Princess and Paris, and one son, Charles Jenkins, III.

Since taking the helm at Fellowship as senior pastor almost twelve years ago, at age 24, succeeding Reverend Clay Evans, Jenkins has more than quadrupled weekend attendance at services, and created a variety of life changing programs and services for children, youth, and adults within the church and in the community. Under his leadership, Fellowship has provided food, clothing, personal care items, and critical assistance to tens of thousands of people in need through several of Fellowship’s outreach programs. Jenkins also created the Fellowship Educational and Economic Development Corporation to further focus on community improvement and empowerment. His belief that a community’s strength and future is dependent on the well being of its youth moved him to establish Maximum Exposure, a youth development entity designed to elevate the thinking, understanding, and behavior of urban youth. Jenkins also founded Gladiators, a mentoring group that focuses on the growth and progress of young African American boys.

He is currently spearheading The Legacy Project, a transformative enterprise with the goal of changing the landscape of urban Chicago while producing cultural amenities, vocational opportunities, an educational hub, and a worship facility. The campus will include, among other things, a school, a health center and eateries, and will create 400 new jobs in the community. Fellowship broke ground on the campus in January 2013.

Charles Jenkins2

Jenkins serves on a number of corporate, educational, and governmental boards, including the Board of Trustees for The City Colleges of Chicago, Clear Channel Chicago Advisory Board, Illinois Attorney General Advisory Board and the Board of Directors of New Schools for Chicago. Most recently, in 2011, he filled a key role on Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s Transition Team. He has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including: being named one of Outreach Magazine’s 30 Emerging Influencers Reshaping Leadership (2011) and appeared on the cover of the magazine in 2012; being selected by Gospel Today magazine as one of seven of America’s Dynamic Trendsetters (2010); being recognized in Black Enterprise magazine’s and Urban Business Roundtable’s Top 40 Game Changers Under 40 (2010); and being inducted into the prestigious Martin Luther King, Jr. Board of Preachers and Scholars of Morehouse College (2009). Jenkins has also been a featured speaker at the National Prayer Breakfast Week International Business Dinner at the White House.

The Best of Both Worlds has been a breakout project for the pastor.  The lead single, “Awesome”, has catapulted the popular minister and Fellowship Chicago to the heights of Gospel music.  The project and the single were nominated for a staggering eight 2013 Stellar Awards, the highest accolade given in the genre.  On Stellar Award night, Jenkins walked away with five Stellar Awards: Song of the Year (for “Awesome”), CD of the Year (for The Best of Both Worlds), Choir of the Year, Traditional Choir of the Year and Recorded Music Packaging of the Year (for The Best of Both Worlds).

Jenkins is currently working on the next release, Any Given Sunday.  Click on the following links to learn more.

The Power of the Black Voice: If We Speak, They Will Listen

Rappers

By H. Lewis Smith

Hip-Hop music is an art form all unto itself.  Its unique rhythmic beat and craftily-packaged rhymes can be very catchy, entertaining and stimulating. Because listeners are often caught up by the beat and impressed with the artist’s literary creativity, and, perhaps are just happy to see one of their own finally make it, they tend to overlook and/or downplay the real message(s) being conveyed; this may help to explain why some rap records with self-destructive, violent, demeaning and insensitive lyrics in nature can be so popular. Rappers feel that they are just entertaining, storytellers, saying what “sounds good”, but the truth of the matter is that their messages do carry clout, are influential, and can evoke action; as such, they must be mindful of what they say, and the artists and their sponsors must be held accountable for the artists’ actions and words.

Self-respecting people are tired of being sold out by heartless, money-hungry rappers. They are becoming less passive and apathetic about the images and messages being conveyed, and are now gaining the gumption to speak up and out against the undignified portrayals rappers promote. Rap artist Lil Wayne came under fire in February for lyrics comparing the 1955 heinous, murderous beating of teenager Emmett Till to his sexual prowess when interacting with female genitalia; in May, he lost a multi-million dollar endorsement deal with PepsiCo’s Mountain Dew as a result. In April, in the face of PepsiCo’s situation, Reebok also decided to proactively sever ties with hip-hop artist Rick Ross because of his own offensive lyrics related to date raping women.

Ultimately, media giants and corporations are in business to make money. Any activity that supports that objective will be played up, promoted and sold like hot cakes to keep making their pockets fatter. On the other hand, any activity that negatively effects or even looks to threaten their wallet will be severed immediately. Emmett Till’s family did not sit back, pass and allow Lil Wayne to have carte blanche to trample over and dishonor the death of their family member. By their speaking out and protesting the beverage company, events were placed into motion, which ultimately led to the loss of Lil Wayne’s endorsement deal. Others found the fortitude to speak up against Rick Ross, and Reebok smartly elected to forgo any negative publicity and resolved their potential issue before it could even become one.

Overall, these situations serve as testimony that when the Black community DEMANDS responsibility and accountability from one of their very own, people do listen and the results can be immediate, profoundly impacting, and have a huge domino effect.  This card of power has always been available to the Black community to play, but in its refusal to hold their own accountable and responsible for anything, the group has always passed on using it.

An old adage, slightly modified for relevance and greater impact, says that he who forgets the past—or even worse, is ignorant to his past—is doomed to REPEAT it.  Gangsta rap promoting street violence, crime, misogyny and use of the n-word are replicas of messages that were browbeaten into the hearts, minds and souls of African-American enslaved ancestors for more than 300 years.

A strong need was and still is felt to emasculate the manhood of the black male and a relentless campaign was undertaken to do just that. This dehumanization process and psychological onslaught of the human mind, implanting a whole new personality in heads, hearts, minds and souls, created an unwarranted image of a subjugated people categorized as n**gers.  Since n**gers were looked upon as sub-human and 3/5 of a person and not considered as human beings, they were, as a result, subjected to the worst form of inhumane treatment—mentally and physically—ever known to humankind.

Enslaved Africans were not willing participants of enslavement and their will to resist had to be broken, therefore, they were programmed and conditioned into assimilating a newly-created inferior status of themselves. Minds of black men were unbelievably mentally abused and broken.  They were forced to believe they possessed moral, intellectual, social and physical characteristics of a bestial savage beast, and a lazy, stupid, dirty, worthless parasite; forced to accept a lesser image of themselves as lethargic, intellectually childlike and ignorant, and obsessively self-indulgent angry animals prone to wanton violence. The enslaved were browbeaten to believe that their dark hue of skin was to be looked upon as physically unattractive, which explains the unhealthy color awareness consciousness in the Black community today.

Any sort of brutal act perpetrated upon the enslaved was always fueled with the rallying cry of the word n**ger as if this would make any unconscionable acts executed upon a so-called “non-human” n**ger acceptable in the eyesight of their Christian God.  While the hanged, beaten and maimed drew their final breath, the last words the victimized would always hear were the chants of n**ger, n**ger, n**ger ringing in their ears. Ironically, contemporary African Americans embrace the pejorative term FAILING to understand why they do, that this is not what they are and more importantly that there is NO such thing as a n**ger/n**ga.  During Hitler’s mistreatment of the Jewish community and experimentation in Eugenics, President Roosevelt admonished him for such conduct, to which Hitler replied, “Everything we do to Jewish people was learned from your treatment of the America Black people.”

Gangsta rap speaks of struggle, strife, and the negative experiences endured in a tone of self-loathe and hate. Because African Americans refuse to learn and fully accept their past as well as see the seriousness in continually giving life to remnants that should have all been left in the past, the feelings of inadequacy and frustration laced in every line of rap music are internalized and treated as legacies that are passed down from generation to generation. The unrelenting 400 year old daily assault on the Black psyche was and is designed to corrupt African Americans’ sense of racial unity and cohesion, mold the character of self-hatred, engender self-doubt and distrust among the group, thus, pulverizing Black unity and halting Black upward mobility.

In this 21st century history is repeating itself through the self-destructive lyrics of rap music.  The impressionable young minds of our Black youth are treated as garbage disposals, dumping anything and everything into it that’s debasing—ALL for the almighty dollar—simultaneously promoting criminal behavior; and it’s happening with the blessing of the Black community since the group collectively refuses to put its foot down and say enough is enough.  Control of the precious minds of Black youth have been handed over to money-hungry rappers and indifferent comedians, actors and actresses, while the intelligentsia, ministers, community leaders sit back and do ABSOLUTELY nothing to stop it, this habitual practice of self-inflicted cultural genocide is totally foreign to other groups around the world.

This 400-year-old on-going indoctrination process needs to be stopped, just as Lil Wayne was stopped by the Till family. Black America must either stand up to these entertainers and the industry that have made billions stomping on the dignity of Black/African-Americans and no longer allow them to do it, or continue to be willing participants in the cultural genocide of black people. Just as slavery and the African-American Holocaust was no joke, cultural genocide is no laughing matter either.  African Americans must somehow learn to separate itself from the minstrel syndrome stop taking themselves and the n-word as a joke.

Today, the n-word is still alive and well because contemporary Black Americans have yet to demonstrate the ability and mental fortitude to let go of an 18th century slave mentality.  Promoting, marketing, and commercializing the n-word globally contribute to keeping it alive and, in the process, are keeping its wicked and abhorrent history alive.

Black/African-Americans must, on the whole, adopt the attitude of the Till family, by standing up and speaking out against the mental abuse of our youth via gangsta rap music with its promotion and encouragement of criminal behavior, use of drugs, glorification of violence and the promotion of the n-word.  No one is an exception; EVERYONE is required to use their voice, stand united, and hold to the fire anyone that attempts to continue to tear down the Black community.  Sacrificing the minds of our youth, glorifying and applauding the status of those who are now financial tycoons as a result of their predatory ways speaks volumes about the over-all unhealthy mentality of the Black/African-American community, our youth deserves more, infinitely more.
